• What is Mill City Commons?
We’re a membership organization for neighbors 55+, most of whom choose to live in the Central Riverfront District of Minneapolis. Our mission is to build community through an exciting array of programs that connect us with each other and the resources needed to maintain and support vibrant lives as we age.
• Why Mill City Commons?
Mill City Commons is a “neighborhood village” within the city. Neighbors and friends provide enriching companionship and welcome support, and help us remain active, smart and valued. With these connections, we’re confident that we can live fully engaged, richly faceted, and dynamic lives—no matter our age—in the riverfront neighborhood we call home.

• Where is Mill City Commons?
The boundaries of Mill City Commons are broadly defined to include an area that stretches from 35W to the Plymouth Avenue Bridge, and from Washington Avenue to Fourth Street SE, including all of Nicollet Island. However, we have numerous members who live outside our boundaries and choose to enjoy and participate in the many opportunities available in our neighborhood.

• What does Mill City Commons offer?
The intangible benefits of membership go well beyond the programs and support covered by dues. We’re committed to understanding and meeting the changing needs of our members as we age and grow in the neighborhood we love. Call or email our friendly staff for access to the resources you need now and in the future to stay healthy, active and living in your home.

• How much are the annual membership dues?
Single membership: $650
Couple/Household: $1050

Dues cover about two thirds of Mill City Commons’ annual budget. We depend on our generous members and friends to make tax-deductible gifts for the other third.
• Is there an age requirement for membership?
No. Mill City Commons membership is not restricted by age.

• What is included in my annual membership fee?
 • Members-only website that serves as your member-to-member connection, provides an up-to-date, detailed calendar of events with online registration, connects you to resources you need to stay healthy, active and living in the neighborhood for as long as you choose, and much more.

Courteous, friendly staff ready to help you take advantage of everything we have to offer including help navigating the members’ only website to register for an event or to find a needed resource using our First Stop Guide. If what you’re looking for isn’t listed in our Guide, our flexible staff will search for options.

First Stop Guide offers members “one stop shopping” for a variety of needs—from a techie to set up your wireless Internet connection to dog walkers and caterers or a referral to home health care and/or a geriatric care manager.

Social, cultural and educational programs, both no-cost and nominally fee-based, these regularly scheduled programs run the gamut of opportunities from potlucks and happy hours, museum tours, foreign policy discussion groups and Healthy Village programming for help navigating life’s inevitable "bumps in the road."

Volunteer opportunities that serve both members and the greater community.

Members-Helping-Members, where members volunteer to help other members with a variety of needs including transportation to doctor appointments or a simple household chore.

Annual Members-Only Celebration to celebrate membership and enjoy an evening of delicious food, beverages and conversation.

The benefits of membership go well beyond the programs and support covered by your dues … and are measured in connections, friendships and engagement.

• How are service requests fulfilled?
Members communicate requests to our staff via email, standard mail, telephone or face-to-face conversation. Staff members help you determine the most appropriate resources to meet your needs, which may be the services of a member volunteer or the work of one of the professional service providers listed in our First Stop Guide. All service providers are member recommended.

• What if I'd like assistance arranging services that involve a fee?
We encourage our members to review the First Stop Guide to schedule services; however, if you would like Mill City Commons to coordinate service details for you, simply contact our staff and they will be happy to help.

• What if I need help with a particular service that is not listed?
Contact your friendly Mill City Commons staff. We’ll research options for you and attempt to identify other members who can provide a recommendation.

The in-home services are a benefit to all Mill City Commons members. Our First Stop Guide includes handymen and both commercial and professional services not typical of most condo associations. You can maintain and improve your home, economically and without sacrificing quality, with our list of providers – from replacing plumbing fixtures, retiling a bathroom floor or installing a shelving unit to replacing an electrical outlet, repainting a high-ceilinged room or installing bathroom tiles.
• I am in great health and middle-aged. What’s my incentive to join?
We believe that chronological age is just a number and welcome the personal growth that comes from multi-generational interactions and connections. Our mission is to enhance the lifestyle of all members, with opportunities to work with our staff to design programs, interest groups and social events that are meaningful for you today and to know that they will be available and continue to enrich your life tomorrow.

In addition, at any age, changes in health can be both sudden and dramatic. By becoming an active member of Mill City Commons today, you will have in place a trusted, familiar community that you can rely on to help you deal with an illness or recovery from surgery.

• May I purchase a membership for my parents?
Yes. Gift memberships are available and are a thoughtful way to show someone you love that you care deeply about their wellbeing. Membership is all about choice, and as members of Mill City Commons, the recipient of your gift may take advantage of as many membership benefits as they choose. A membership also provides peace of mind—for you and for them.

• Should assisted living or a nursing facility be required, what does Mill City Commons offer?
We are committed to understanding and meeting the changing needs of our members as we age and grow in the neighborhood we love. Trusted service providers, including care managers, are part of the Mill City Commons network. They are happy to help you and your family navigate this next step if and when it’s needed, and our staff is available to guide you as you make your decisions. You’ll also benefit from the perspectives and experience of other members.
