Join us as we hear from author Michelle Phelps as she discusses her new book, Minnesota Reckoning: Race, Violence and the Politics of Policing in America. Phelps’ book explores the politics of police reform in Minneapolis before and after the George Floyd murder and the widespread demonstrations in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and other efforts to change policing here and elsewhere in the United States.

The book traces the history of the MPD, from its founding through to the George Floyd murder and attempts to "end" policing as we know it in Minneapolis. The book shows that the post-2020 mobilization in the city emerged not from a single moment of rage, but decades of organizing efforts. Yet the politics of transforming policing proved more complex than they first appeared, as police came to represent both the threat of state violence and the promise of state protection. Phelps will introduce her book to us and show how the history of policing in Minneapolis together with contemporary national debates about law enforcement shape current efforts to reform policing and provide public security in Minneapolis.  Michelle Phelps is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota.
