About this event
Major economic and social shifts often build slowly and unevenly—until the evidence becomes impossible to ignore. That’s the trajectory of a more than three-decade rise in debt among older Americans, both approaching and during retirement. This growing burden threatens the financial security of increasing numbers of retirees, particularly those with modest incomes.
An AARP report reveals that nearly half of older adults surveyed use credit cards to cover basic living expenses. Other studies show home equity is being tapped to pay bills. Combined with medical debt, student loans, and auto loans, the picture raises serious concerns.
Chris Farrell, senior economics contributor at Minnesota Public Radio, will examine the forces driving this troubling trend—and how it is becoming a debt trap for far too many.
This program is part of a series focused on finance and economics.
