About this event

The United States and China remain locked in a complex relationship defined by deep economic ties and growing strategic rivalry. Relations continue to be strained by tariffs, rapid military modernization, and rising tensions over Taiwan, even as both countries remain interconnected through global trade and institutions.

In this session, we will explore key questions shaping the future of U.S.–China relations, including competition for technological leadership, supply-chain security, and the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific. We will also consider whether a renewed Trump administration would pursue a coherent China policy, whether tariffs on rare earth minerals could be effective, and what strategic options are available to the United States.

Our speaker for this session is Dr. Richard Leitch. Dr. Leitch earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Illinois in 1995. Since joining Gustavus in 1996, he has taught courses in international relations, comparative and Asian politics, environmental politics, and the politics of poverty. His research focuses on Japanese domestic politics and foreign policy, and he is co-author of Japan’s Role in the Post-Cold War World.

Registration for each session is required for Great Decisions members. Please register on the MCC website. Sorry, not open to guests.

Great Decisions is a foreign policy discussion series offered to our Mill City Commons members. The full program includes eight sessions throughout the year, and participation requires a one-time fee to attend all sessions.
