Member Volunteering

Opportunities to offer member to member support and share individual experiences and talents are central to Mill City Commons' mission. As a Village member, you can get involved in a number of ways:

  • Assist fellow MCC members encountering a "bump in the road." Offer to help with a meal, transportation needs or grocery shopping.
  • Suggest and develop an MCC program or event. Be a Program Sponsor.
  • Host an MCC event either in your home or community room.
  • Participate in the annual "Turkey and Extra Helpings" holiday food and gift drive for those in need.
  • Serve as a member of our Board of Directors or on a committee.
  • Spread the word about Mill City Commons and all we have to offer.

If you would like to volunteer to help in any way listed above, please let us know!

Volunteer Opportunities in the Community

Our neighborhood is full of organizations doing great and important work. Browse the list below for more information on how you can help. If you know of a volunteer opportunity in our neighborhood that you would like to share with members, please get in touch with us.

Catholic Tutor Corps

The Catholic Tutor Corps (CTC) has been providing volunteer tutors to Minneapolis and St. Paul Catholic schools for 18 years. The tutors, working one-on-one in grades 1-8, have become an increasingly important resource for these schools and the demand for more tutors continues to grow. The schools we serve have predominately low income populations. Please consider volunteering a couple of hours a week to share your knowledge with some young students. Click on the CTC link above to see a list of schools with openings. If you are interested, contact ctutorcorps@gmail.com.

  • Game Night: Volunteer at an event or donate games and art supplies
  • Advantage Center Book and Supply Drive: Collect books and supplies

Giving Voice Chorus

MacPhail’s Giving Voice Chorus creates an opportunity for people living with Alzheimer’s disease in our community to join together with their care partners to connect through the power of music. Giving Voice shares, celebrates and remembers the joy of singing.

Volunteers assist choir members 1-1 at weekly rehearsals and performances and help serve snacks and beverages before and after rehearsals to facilitate social connections and community. No previous singing experience is required.

If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website.

Heart of Dance

From Rumba to Respect, and Tango to Teamwork, Heart of Dance is changing the world through the joy of partner dance. Since 2015, Minnesota nonprofit Heart of Dance has brought the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of social dance to those who need it most and who otherwise might not have access – from fifth and eighth graders in the Social Emotional Learning curriculum Dancing Classrooms, to older adults in the up-and-coming Dance for Life program.

There are so many exciting volunteer opportunities at Heart of Dance, both in and out of the classroom. Support Teaching Artists during lessons at participating schools or senior communities as a Classroom Assistant (no dance experience necessary), or help out at events. Professional ballroom dancers and high-level amateurs are also welcome to visit our classrooms and demonstrate their skills as Classroom Dance Buddies.

Reading Partners

Reading Partners harnesses the power of community volunteers to make a meaningful and measurable difference on students reading proficiency. The one-on-one tutoring model is backed by evidenced-based research proven to raise the reading proficiency of K-5 students who are up to 2-1/2 years below grade level in reading. Volunteer reading partners empower students to succeed in reading and in life by providing individualized, personal attention to each student.

Commit to as little as one hour a week (usually Monday-Thursday, during school hours) at one of eleven schools in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Register on their website or send an email to volunteerTC@readingpartners.org.
